From May 2-4, 2019 the Fossavatn Ski Marathon comes to Ísafjörður, Iceland for a 3-day competition made up of 1km – 50km cross country ski races. Skiers from across the globe will travel to Iceland to take part in this exciting event!
Fossavatn is a staple sporting competition in Icelandic culture, and many cross-country ski superstars have competed in the marathon, including local skier Kristjan Rafn Gudmundsson, who won the race 12 times in the 1960s and 70s, and Sigurdur Jonsson, who first skied the race in 1938 and has participated nearly every year since.
Many different courses are available for both children and adults over the three days, so the whole family can take part in the events! After three days of racing, everyone can join in the celebration known as Fossavatn party, where all the competitors and spectators come together to enjoy traditional Icelandic food, live music and dancing at the Hótel Ísafjörður. Tickets to the party are available here.
Registration for Fossavatn is still open here! If you can’t make it to Iceland for the event, be sure to watch skiers cross the finish line at this livestream.
