March 14: Viking Bakery Grand Opening from 3-5pm
Birgir Róbertsson is preparing to open the doors of his new Icelandic bakery on March 14. The bakery will feature Amma’s Pastry, oatmeal, sukulaði smákökkur (small chocolate cookies), Viking Waffles, kleinur and flatkökur, rugbrauð (brown bread), malt bread, white bread, and raisin bread. Stop by for a taste of traditional Icelandic baked goods!
March 14-April 5: Ellen Denny Appears in Mirvish Production of “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike”
Ellen Denny, an actress with Icelandic roots, is coming to Toronto March 14-April 5 to perform in the Mirvish production of “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” alongside well-known stars Jennifer Dale and Fiona Reid. A Multitalented actress, Ellen has performed in musical theatre, opera, and contemporary plays; a career that has already taken her to six different Canadian provinces.
“Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” a hilarious Tony Award winning farce, is currently playing at Winnipeg’s Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre and has received rave reviews. It will open at Toronto’s Panasonic Theatre on March 14. Ellen is currently enjoying the Icelandic milieu in her grandparents’ hometown, but looks forward to returning to Toronto for this fun show! March 23-29: Sturla Gunnarsson’s ‘Monsoon’ Plays at Bloor Hot Docs Cinema
Directed by Sturla Gunnarsson, a renowned Icelandic director, ‘Monsoon’ is bound to impress audiences. Part road movie, part spectacle, part human drama, ‘Monsoon’ is a documentary exploration of chaos, creation and faith in the land of believers. The subject is, of course, a monsoon, an incomparably vast seasonal weather system that permeates and unifies the immense and varied culture of India, shaping the conditions of existence for its billion-plus inhabitants. March 24: Free Screening of Life in a Fishbowl (Vonarstræti)
Icelandic director Baldvin Zophoníasson’s Life in a Fishbowl was a hit at the domestic box office and was Iceland’s submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars. The intriguing, multiple-narrative drama follows three people — a struggling single mother, a former athlete trying to scale the corporate ladder, and a once-acclaimed author turned full-time drunk — whose lives intersect in surprising ways.
The free screening will take place at Ryerson University, Room IMA307, 3rd floor, School of Image Arts, 122 Bond Street. Doors will open at 6:00pm and the movie starts at 6:30pm. The movie will be preceded by short student films shot in Iceland last summer during the Image Arts workshop.
April 16: Apparat Organ Quartet performs at the Drake Hotel
Effortlessly switching between dance floor fillers and headbanging anthems, Iceland’s Apparat Organ Quartet is sometimes described as “Machine Rock and Roll.” After finding success in Europe,AOQ has signed to Head in the Sand Records and is releasing Pólýfónía, their latest album, in Canada. No longer strangers to North America, AOQ has been featured on Seattle’s KEXP radio station as a part of our very own Reykjavik Calling concert in 2012. They’ll be performing at the Drake Hotel as an extension of Winnipeg’s Nuna Festival, which takes place from April 17-26.
