In Iceland Apr 24–27, 2019

Experience the Reykjavík International Literary Festival!

One of Europe’s most widely acclaimed literary festivals returns for its 34th year this April.

Calling all literary enthusiasts! Next month, one of Iceland’s most celebrated events will be returning to the capital city: the Reykjavík International Literary Festival. From April 24th to 27th, 2019, guests will have the opportunity to take part in a number of fascinating literature programs hosted at several iconic venues throughout Reykjavík, including the Iðnó Theater, Nordic House, and Veröld, Vigdís’ house!

This biannual festival has been held since 1985, and returns each year with a variety of entertaining new experiences; guests are invited to meet famous authors, attend readings and seminars, and even dance with their favorite authors at the Literary Ball! In the past, the festival has welcomed Nobel Prize winners, novelists, historians, political activists, cartoonists, and many more literary visionaries to take part in these exciting programs. This year, many notable authors will be in attendance, including Maja Lunde, Roy Jacobsen, Samanta Schweblin, and Lily King. See the full list of this year’s attendees here!

Since Iceland is a country known for its love of literature, it truly takes pride in this festival. Icelandic literature continues to gain vast amounts of attention worldwide; in the past ten years alone, translation of Icelandic works into foreign languages has tripled! Much of this global success can be attributed to the Icelandic Literature Center, which raises awareness for Iceland’s unique works of literature both domestically and internationally. The efforts of the Icelandic Literature Center coupled with the hard work done by Icelandic authors and publishers to translate their own works have contributed to Reykjavík’s being designated the City of Literature!

All of the event programs are in English, and there are no admission fees. To find out more about the Reykjavík International Literary Festival and how you can experience it for yourself, visit the festival’s official website!
