In Iceland Feb 28–Mar 01, 2020

Experience the Austurland Freeride Festival!

The event takes place in East Iceland from February 28-March 1.

The Austurland Freeride Festival is a new backcountry ski and split-board event in Austurland, the eastern region of Iceland. Occurring from February 28 – March 1, 2020, this festival enables visitors to enjoy unique and beautiful Austurland scenery, while being assisted by experienced local guides.

A variety of cultural events such as concerts will be offered simultaneously, and visitors will have chances to try out local cuisine.

The two day main event includes an expert course where skiers start this day by one fjord, cross two mountain passes at altitudes of over 800 meters, and finish the day in another fjord. Then, they use their equipment to reach a backcountry peak 1,000 meters above sea level and ski down.

For beginners looking to dive into backcountry skinning and split-boarding, this offering involves an  avalanche course covering alpine hazards and responses, an introduction to skinning and split-boarding, and on the final day, skiers take the Oddskarð lift, then skin farther up with experienced guides before skiing down.

A more detailed program will be released closer to the event so be sure to keep an eye out!
