Next month, Iceland will host its first International Documentary Film Festival from July 17th through July 21st! This new festival was conceptualized as a way to “introduce quality documentaries” to the local audience and connect burgeoning filmmakers from across the globe. The film festival will take place in the small town of Akranes, which is about 45 minutes outside of Reykjavík.
The festival’s debut was developed by a team of four people, ranging from festival organizers to documentary filmmakers. Though the team (Ingibjörg Halldórsdóttir, Heiðar Mar Björnsson, Hallur Örn Árnason, and Gunnar Tómas Kristófersson) are all Icelandic nationals, they are committed to showcasing global talent. Although documentary submissions have already closed, you can browse previews of a few of the festival selections on their Facebook page. The featured documentaries include Serbian, Italian, and Japanese productions.
The films will be shown in Biohollin, one of the oldest operating theaters in Iceland! Guests will be convening from all over the world to connect over film, watch works of art, and explore the surrounding town of Akranes – which gets 20 hours of sunlight in the summer. At the end of the festival, three awards will be presented: Best Documentary Short, Best Documentary Feature, and an audience award.
