The Moorland – October 11 – 14
Iceland’s signature youth literature festival, the Moorland returns to Reykjavik from October 11-14. Now in its ninth year, this year’s festival theme is “The North,” and celebrates the best of Nordic literature with participation from authors and scholars from Iceland and beyond. The first Moorland festival was held in 2001, originally called “Cat in the Moorland.” After achieving great success, the biennial festival is now held in coordination with the Reykjavik International Literature Festival. The Moorland’s (Vatnsmýri) name originates from the Nordic House, the cultural institution where the festival takes place.
The Moorland festival is proudly hosted by Mýrin, the association with representatives from IBBY Iceland, SÍUNG (Association of Children’s Book Writers in Iceland), The Writer’s Union of Iceland, The University of Iceland, Reykjavík City Library and the Nordic House. The festival schedule includes lectures by literary scholars, author discussions and readings, and panels hosted at the Nordic House. For more information on tickets and events, click here.
Operadays in Reykjavik – October 20 – November 4
One of the most exciting music festivals, Operadays, takes over Reykjavik from October 20 until November 4. With the goal of transforming Reykjavik itself into a dazzling opera stage and music hub, performances will take place across the city in unexpected locations. During Operadays’ last appearance in Kópavogur in 2016, the festival was nominated for Music Festival of the Year at the Icelandic Music Awards. This year’s program lineup includes something for everyone, from song recitals with Icelandic singers to children’s opera performances to various pop-up performances throughout Reykjavik’s streets.
