Drifting in Daylight: May 15 – June 20

On Friday, May 15th, Creative Time and Central Park Conservancy will unveil Drifting in Daylight, a “dreamy springtime pathway of art winding through” New York City’s Central Park. Eight different artists’ works will be displayed, free to the public, every Friday and Saturday from May 15 to June 20. As part of the Central Park Conservancy’s 35th anniversary celebration, “this free public exhibition aims to draw visitors into the park’s beautiful north end, much of which has been expertly restored by the Conservancy.”

Among the artists is Icelander Ragnar Kjartansson and his floating exhibit, the S.S. Hangover. The boat, described as “a haphazard hybrid of Greek, Icelandic and Venetian ship design,” was originally a fishing boat from Reykjavik, which Kjartansson remade into what it is today. The S.S. Hangover was debuted at the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013. Throughout the Drifting in Daylight project, Kjartansson’s boat will have the Grammy-nominated Metropolis Ensemble and New York’s finest young chamber musicians, led by conductor Andrew Cyr, performing aboard the vessel. Icelandic conceptual and performance artist Ragnar Kjartansson’s practice draws on a rich history of performance and stage traditions. His interdisciplinary and often-playful work creates tensions between the dramatic and the mundane, tragedy and humor. His performances frequently have an extended duration, lasting from several hours to days at time, and transforming simple motifs, actions, and music through sustained repetition into what the artist calls performative sound sculptures.His love for performance initially translated as endeavors into music-making. Kjartansson has been active in numerous Icelandic bands of varying quality and popularity and has since had ongoing collaborative relationships with Kjartan Sveinsson–a founding member of Sigur Rós–virtuoso Davíð Þór Jónsson, and the band The National.
