Experience the magic of the Reykjavik Midsummer Music festival June 16-19! For the fifth year in a row, the Midsummer Music festival will bring together exceptional musicians from all over the world to perform in the Harpa, Reykjavik’s magnificent concert hall. The theme for this year’s festival is “Wanderer,” and will take audiences across diverse musical landscapes under a bright Icelandic summer sky.
The event will kick off with the concert “Interstellar Wanderer,” featuring the music of Maurice Ravel, Kaija Saariaho and Skúli Sverrisson. A second concert will be held at Mengi, an off venue performance space, featuring works of Toru Takemitsu, inspired by the Beatles. On the second night, Gustav Mahler’s “Songs of a Wayfarer” will be performed with arrangements of Hugo Wolf and Robert Schumann at Harpa’s Eldborg Hall. The “Wanderer Fantasy” concert on the third night highlights selections of Charles Ives, John Cage, Bela Bartok and George Crumb. An additional concert at Mengi will incorporate the folk music of Robert Schumann, Giovanni Sollima and Luciano Berio with Kaija Saariaho’s “…de la Terre.”
On the final evening, Harpa’s Norðurljós Recital Hall will celebrate the 90th birthday of one of Iceland’s most beloved composers, Jón Nordal, with a variety of his works., The festival’s grand finale will honor songs of Schubert and Beethoven with works by Áskell Másson, Maurice Ravel and Antonin Dvořák.
