On June 17, 1944, the Republic of Iceland was formally established, and Iceland became an independent nation after being under the control of the Crown of Denmark since 1380. June 17 was chosen as the celebratory day to honor the birthdate of Jón Sigurðsson, the leader of Iceland’s independence movement.
This year’s Icelandic National Day celebrations will take place in Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, and will run from 10 am to 6 pm local time. The celebrations will begin with the chiming of all church bells in Reykjavík, followed by a mass in Domkirkjan Cathedral.
Following the mass, all are invited to partake in family-oriented entertainment and activities. There will be parades starting from Hlemmur and Hagatorg Square, both in Reykjavik. In Hljómskálagarður Park (by Tjörnin lake), complimentary activities include outdoor play sets, games and a puppet show from Brúðubíllinn.
A concert featuring Icelandic musicians will take place from the afternoon into the evening on the main stage in Hljómskálagarður. The Icelandic Circus will also make an appearances in Hljómskálagarður with engaging characters, workshops and circus shows! The evening will conclude with a concert a Austurvöllur and an accordion ball at City Hall.
