Icelanders embrace the balance between darkness and light throughout the year in their art, culture and entertainment. The Winter Lights Festival is an annual event in Reykjavík that celebrates both the winter season and the growing sunlight after a long period of darkness. The festival consists of light installations, culture and outdoor activities, and provides entertainment for Reykjavík’s locals and guests alike. The program is hosted in many spots throughout Reykjavík, including major museums and thermal pools.
This year’s festival takes place from February 6-9. All events are free (aside from the Northern Lights Run). The famous “Museum Night” happens on February 8, where museums across the capital open their doors and offer visitors entertainment such as dance, theater, lectures, live music, film, literature readings and much more. All museums are open from 6-11pm.
On February 9, participants can experience Pool Night, where they can try Iceland’s exceptional thermal pools for free! Pool Night includes fun in-pool activities, music and pool illuminations. If you’re lucky, you might even get a glimpse of the Northern Lights while relaxing in a hot tub in one of the outdoor pools! All swimming pools are open from 5-10pm. Each night of the festival, six light installations will be illuminated, so visitors can view and experience the spectacles as they walk throughout the city. Find the full program here!
