Celebrate Reykjavik Culture Night on August 22

Get cultured this summer at the most popular annual event in Iceland!

It’s possible that there has never been more to do in 24 hours in one city than on Culture Night in Reykjavik! August 22 in Reykjavik will see two marathons in the morning (one for adults, one for kids) – and once the runners cool down, the streets will fill with 100,000 people for the biggest annual event in Iceland!

This year marks the 20th annual “Cultural Night,” or Menningarnótt in Icelandic. There will be 600 events throughout the city and one-third of Iceland’s population will be in attendance! Culture Night is created by the same people who will enjoy it – the city residents. Of course, anyone visiting Iceland on August 22 must stop by and see all the theater, music, fine arts, food, string quartets and more that the festival has to offer.

All of the events are free of charge, and the slogan for Culture Night is “Come on in!”, referencing the Icelandic custom of hospitality. And you truly are welcomed to “come on in,” as the streets, museums, businesses and even residential homes host hundreds of events for the festival. The main objective of this festive day is to encourage participants to deliver a diverse and rich offering of cultural events with a taste of something for everyone – and a few surprises too. Culture Night is known to mark the start of Reykjavik’s cultural year, in which museums, theaters and other institutions launch their annual programs.

If you’re in the area, make sure you soak in all the interesting things Cultural Night has to offer! And for an earlier start at the fun, The 2015 Islandsbanki Reykjavik Marathon kicks off at 8:40 a.m., and the children’s Lazy Town Run follows after.
