Since 1999, Reykjavik Pride has become one of Iceland’s biggest events of the year, attracting 100,000 participants from Iceland and all over the world! This year, from August 7-12, festivities will be held throughout the capital city to celebrate the LGBTQIA community in the most accepting country in the world.
The 2018 theme of pride is “baráttugleði,” meaning the joy of fighting. Gunnlaugur Bragi, President of Reykjavik Pride explained the theme saying, “let’s embrace the successes which have been won. Let’s thank the people who paved the way, and let’s remember those who have breathed their last and cannot celebrate with us today. And then let’s show the world how beautiful diversity is – with joy as our weapon.”
The celebration will kick off with the yearly tradition of painting an entire street rainbow, marking the formal start of Pride in Reykjavik. Get your paint brush ready as the location won’t be revealed until August 6.
This year’s schedule is packed with fun events, including workshops, film nights, a Queer literature walking tour, a concert featuring Queer Icelandic women, Queer pub crawl and most notably, the Pride parade. Many of these events are free, but you can also register for a pride pass to gain entry into many of the events throughout the week. You can find the full schedule of events here.
