Celebrate Icelandic National Day June 17!

Celebrate Iceland’s past and future with this holiday that commemorates the country’s freedom.

Each year on June 17, Iceland commemorates the foundation of the Republic of Iceland as an independent nation. Iceland was previously under the control of the Crown of Denmark from 1380 until gaining independence in 1944. Join us in celebrating this public holiday and learn more about the day’s history.

June 17 was chosen as the commemoration because it honors the birthday of the Icelandic Independence Movement’s founding father, Jón Sigurðsson. Traditional celebrations take place in the capital, Reykjavík, where the city hosts Independence Day parades, dances, street theater, and many other events throughout the day.

While observing COVID-19 guidelines, the 2021 celebration will continue throughout Iceland. Traditional celebrations include chiming of all church bells in Reykjavík, a mass in Domkirkjan Cathedral, a ceremony led by the Icelandic government, and a parade Austurvöllur to Suðurgata Cemetery, where the Chairman of the City Council lays a wreath of flowers on the grave of Jón Sigurðsson, the leader of Iceland’s independence movement. Those currently in Iceland can view the traditional celebrations live on the Icelandic television station, Ruv.
