The Best Holiday Events Coming to Reykjavik!

Iceland’s capital becomes a winter wonderland in December.

Festive lights, fresh snowfall and winter markets, turn Reykjavik into a picturesque winter wonderland during the holidays. With so many activities happening in the Nordic capital throughout December, there’s something for everyone to get in the holiday spirit. We’ve compiled a list of all of the must-see concerts, events, and markets for you and your family to check out!

Skating Rink at Ingólfstorg Square

Right in the heart of Reykjavik, Ingólfstorg Square will host a skating rink throughout the month starting on December 1. Open between 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., anyone with skates is welcome for free, or you can rent skates and helmets directly at the rink. A Christmas village with local food and beverages will be available next door so the winter activities never have to end!

Christmas Village Opening in Hafnarfjörður

At 8 p.m. on December 1, the town of Hafnarfjörður will turn into a magical Christmas village. Visitors can enjoy the craftsmanship of cozy Christmas houses with unique Icelandic architecture twisted into the design. Opening day festivities include hot chocolate, a tree lighting, Christmas carols, and of course a visit from Santa Claus!

Market at Hlemmur

Looking for a traditional Icelandic holiday meal? Stop by the Market at Hlemmur! Opening on December 2, all restaurants and shops will offer Icelandic products such as homemade bread, ice cream and local produce. Inspired by the great European food halls, this market is sure to enchant both locals and tourists alike!

Christmas at the Symphony

Grab your tickets for this Christmas musical celebration! The concert is offered for two days on December 16 and 17. Guests will enjoy beautiful Icelandic music, Christmas classics, and selected ballet numbers from The Nutcracker. You can purchase tickets and learn more here.

Sissel Christmas Concert 2017:

Sissel Kyrkjebø, one of the most popular singers in Scandanavia, is returning to Iceland just in time for the holidays! Her phenomenal voice and unique stage presence make this an exciting show to see. This dazzling show is only available for two nights at the famous Harpa concert hall in Reykjavik, so be sure to get your tickets soon!
