Icelandic musician, Unnar Gísli Sigurmundsson, otherwise known as Júníus Meyvant, is celebrating the recent release of his sophomore album, “Across the Borders,” by sharing it with his U.S. fans at several shows throughout the nation. Starting in Washington, D.C. on May 13, he’ll then travel to Philadelphia, PA on May 14 and close out his U.S. series in Brooklyn, NY on May 17. Grab your tickets here and check out the album here!
Júníus Meyvant was born and raised in Iceland’s Westman Islands where he fostered his creative talent and excitement for nature. It wasn’t until he was in his early twenties that he stumbled upon a beat-up guitar at his parents’ house and recognized his musical potential and desire to create intriguing melodies.
Júníus Meyvant has a melodic and rich take on folk pop that has a highly familiar and soulful feel to it. With a wide range of sound, his music is all encompassing, made up of voice, guitar, walloping rhythms, horns, synths and mellotron. Many have compared his sounds to Sam Cooke, Charles Bradley, the Rolling Stones and Devendra Banhart. He premiered his award winning debut single, “Color Decay,” in 2014, which has since garnered high praise and popularity around the globe. The following year, Meyvant received the Icelandic Music Awards for “Best Single” and “Newcomer of the Year” and released his debut full length album, “Floating Harmonies,” shortly after in 2016.
