The 2018 Winnipeg New Music Festival Celebrates its 27th Year in Canada!

The eight-day festival featured highlighted acts of both Icelandic and international music and film.

The Winnipeg New Music Festival returned to Canada for its 27th year. From January 27 to February 3, the festival showcased the latest and greatest of Icelandic music, film and more in Manitoba. Curated by composer Matthew Patton and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the festival featured world premieres of musical selections from major Icelandic musicians and other internationally acclaimed artists.

The festival did not disappoint this year with an all-star lineup at the shows, including performances by Philip Glass, Alex Somers (of Jonsi and Alex), Michael Snow, Matthew Patton, Bjork’s pianist and collaborator Jonas Sen, and film directors Guy Maddin, Bill Morrison and more! As a special treat, attendees will also saw new collaborations from Sigur Ros and Hilmar Orn Hilmarsson, two-time Academy Award for Best Score nominee and Golden Globe winner Johann Johannsson, and Bjork for the first time. The festival also was the platform for the world premiere of the live music score and film of “Dawson City: Frozen Time” by director Bill Morrison.

Offering even more access to the talented artists and acts, attendees experienced pre-New Music Festival kick-off on Thursday, January 25 at the Park Theater. Jonas Sen provided a musical performance alongside Ensign Broderick to accompany the premiere of the film “Accidence” from director Guy Madden. The festival also included panels, films and talks from the artists throughout the week, including a discussion from Hilmar Orn Hilmarsson at the Icelandic Department of the University of Manitoba on January 30.

This festival was another big success this year, and a great event for the entire family or anyone who wants to experience the best of Icelandic and international music collaborations!
